Unskilled

Just an unskilled labourer
The bottom of the heap
One of those unsung people
Whose labour came cheap.
He could cut and lay a hedge
Plough and sow a field
Drain any land clear a ditch
Tend a crop as it grew to yield
He could harvest and thres
Feed and tend the stock
As a worker on the farm
As dependable as a rock.

To supplement his income.
He worked long and hard
Digging the village graves
Caring for the churchyard
Swept people's chimneys
Took on  work he was able
To keep our feet dry shod
And food on our table.
Not unusual for those days
For the bottom of the heap
One of those unsung people
Whose labour came cheap.
